The Census Index Books are the first step in locating your relatives in census records. They contain a complete listing of all heads of households that appeared in the census itself and are listed by state and then alphabetically. Once you find a family that may be yours, you then need to go and locate the actual microfiche copy of the census record. The purpose of this page is to list the head of household as it appears in the index only; not the actual census record information.

These census index lists have been entered exactly as they appear in the books. Any typos you may encounter or asterisk (*) symbols you see are from the index book, not me. Any comments that I have made are in italics and in a reduced font.

Colored text within individual census index lists indicates a probable relationship to others in that same list with the same text color based on location of residence at the time of the census.

Since Partain, Parten, Partin, and Parton all may be related I suggest you read through all sections, which will make it easier to follow possible family lines across states and name variations.
