He was an amateur boxer known as ‘Fireball McNamara’. He listed that his father was born in Ireland, and his mother was born in New York based on the 1920 Census, Brooklyn Assembly District 20, Kings, New York (Bushwick neighborhood). Joseph registered for the draft for WWI in Brooklyn. According to his draft registration he had blue eyes, black hair and was of slight build. He left Dorothy and the two children at some point prior to 1930. At least we think he left her rather than that he died. Eileen BISHOP McNAMARA remembers that her husband, George McNAMARA never mentioned his father, and that he abandoned the family durning the depression. He may have left the city to look for work and just never came back. She has a vauge memory that George’s father was a drinker and violent. Overall, very little was ever known about him, and in all the years Eileen was married to George he never mentioned his father.

Was a pitcher. Was Drafted in WWII . Practiced and played baseball while in the military, but during training they discovered he had a heart murmur. I think he was released from service after that. He had Rheumatic fever when he was young which contributed to his death. Something about a valve replacement that he never did very well after. Had emphysema and heart failure. Smoked and drank. His SSN application was blank for father.
