The Death of Aged Samuel R. Vines (from an old photocopy which was very difficult to read)
Samuel R. Vines, who for many years was in business on Water Street, died this morning at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Major and Mrs. James T. Chase. Mr. Vines was 89 years old on Monday Last and it was on the anniversary of his birth that he contracted the illness with which he died.  Up to a few weeks ago he was in excellent health and in fact, up until Monday had no ailment beyond a slight cold, to which he attached no importance.  He had planned to make a trip to NY to spend Thanksgiving Day.  However on Monday night he was seized with a sever chill and pneumonia quietly developing, terminated fatally this morning.
Mr. Vines was born in Berkshire, England, and came to this country as a boy.  He settled in Albany, and later came to Newburgh. For 38 years he had been in business on Water Street handling umbrellas, costumes, wigs, masks and ??
It is a rather odd coincidence that ?? eight months ago today that at the very hour upon which he left his wife of sixty-eight years ?? He is survived by several sons and daughters; John Vines of Saratoga, George Vines of New York; Mrs. William ? Ostrander of Poughnie?; Mrs. John Elmendorf of ?; and Mrs. Chase of this city.

Obituary for Margaret A. TERWILLIGER SARVIS(from an old photocopy which was very difficult to read)
There died in New York city, on the second day of September, 1892, Margaret A. Sarvis, widow of Lockwood W. Sarvis. When a child Margaret A. Terwilliger came to Newburgh. On the 4th day of July, 1850, she was married to Lockwood W. Sarvis, and resided here until shortly after the death of her husband in 1888, when she went to New York city and lived with her daughter Georgiana Vines, until her death. To one so well known in this city for sixty years or more ?? fitting to make more than a passing observation of her noble ??. There are but few persons ?? age living in Newburgh but ?? her kind ? and ? di? wars rest and often ? help and ? the poor. ? in a little church ? village can be seen ? simple ?. She was “so pleasant”. Margaret ? so pleasant. She hated ? wrong. To those who ? as the sconrger of wrong ? hated strife, one who hated th? scorned scorn, the pleasant ? aspects of her nature were ? to those whose precious pr? ? her, in her ?, nothing, ? their memory that ? ? keep them ? mother. Sleep in peace on the outskirts of this beautiful city, beneath whose hills you so often walked/wandered when it was but a village. May the earth press lightly upon you.

She was the daughter of George W. SIMPSON and Sarah RAMSEY, and her family was originally from Ireland and Scotland. Sarah RAMSEY was the daughter of William RAMSEY who was born in Armagh, Ireland, about 1828. He was in Company A of the 42nd Regiment of the New York Volunteers during the civil war. He became disabled in the following manner at Chickahominy River, near Fair Oaks Station : “After working all night, in building a Corduroy Bridge, on or about the 18th day of May A.D. 1862, the next morning, about 4’O’clock, while in the act of stepping from one log to another, he made a misstep, and fell on the ??, or sharp corner of a log, prepared for said Corduroy Bridge, falling upon his back, and then and there, and thereby seriously and permanently injuring his back and spine, which terminated in fistla?, by reason of which said William Ramsey was rendered wholly incapable of performing the duties of a soldier: that since his discharge as afore said the said William Ramsey is wholly unfit to perform any kind of manual labor …”. He was listed in his papers as being 5 feet 9 inches tall with dark completion, dark eyes, and grey hair at age 36. In 1873 he was living in Montgomery County, Ohio. He died in July 1890.

Grandpa remembers that Georgiana’s father, George W. SIMPSPON used to dress up like Uncle Sam on holidays and like to shoot cannons off by the railroad. He remembers him as being a little batty – “As nutty as a fruitcake.”

Georgiana also had a cousin named William H. Mapes (b. 12 Mar 1861). He was the son of George W. Mapes who died in 1884. I do not know yet how he is connected to the family, and the copy of the article from Elsworth Vines was not complete.

Grandma and Grandpa Vines met when Grandpa was on a date with Grandma’s cousin.  Grandma’s sister Eleanor and the cousin took Grandpa to a play Grandma was in. He recalls that she was playing a Little Rascal.  It was love at first sight. Grandpa asked her out, even though she was ‘dating a big guy’ as Grandpa put it.  They never dated anyone else again.

Grandma and Grandpa Vines were married two times, although never divorced. They originally eloped because they wanted to go on a trip together. Although Grandma’s mother gave them permission to go on the trip, seeing as they were already engaged, Grandma and Grandpa thought it would be better to me married first, so they did so. They later had a public marriage. The picture to the left is from their first marriage celebration.
